Inmate on Medical Parole Missing in California

California corrections officials say a disabled inmate who was released on medical parole is missing after his empty wheelchair was found near the San Diego County convalescent home where he was living.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Thursday that 50-year-old Ronald Virgil Taylor was last seen Wednesday afternoon.

His criminal history includes several convictions from Los Angeles County for robbery, kidnapping, burglary, assault and bringing a weapon to prison.

He was released in June under a 2011 California law that allows physically incapacitated inmates who require 24-hour medical care to be paroled.

Officials say Taylor requires constant medical attention. They believe someone may have helped him leave the facility.

Department spokesman Luis Patino says Taylor is believed to be the first medically paroled inmate to go missing.
