Lucky 7 for San Diego Panda Bai Yun?

Bai Yun, the San Diego Zoo's giant female panda, has been artificially inseminated, and zookeepers are hoping she becomes a mother for the seventh time.

The Los Angeles Times reports the 23-year-old panda is near the end of her reproductive years. Recent couplings with Gao Gao, with whom she has five cubs, were unsuccessful.

So Bai Yun was inseminated last week with sperm from another panda, Shi Shi.

The newspaper reports Bai Yun's first cub, Hua Mei, was the first panda cub to be born in the United States and survive to adulthood.
