A 22-year-old man is accused of using his cell phone to try and take pictures of a 10-year-old girl in a department store dressing room, Alhambra police said.
The man allegedly entered the women's changing room of the Kohl’s department store at 1201 S. Fremont Ave. in Alhambra Wednesday afternoon and attempted to take a video of the young girl with his iPhone. He was arrested on suspicion of child annoyance.
Security cameras captured the suspect following the girl and her mother into the changing room area. The girl saw a camera under the stall and told her mother, police said.
The mother then notified store security.
"This kid was really sharp," said Detective Sgt. Jim Hammond, of the Alhambra Police Department. "The mother didn't even catch this."
It was not immediately clear whether the man took any photos because investigators have not viewed the content of the suspect's cell phone. A Supreme Court ruling earlier this year established limits regarding police searches involving a suspect's cell phone.
"They state, essentially, that we could not do a pre-booking search," said Hammond. "Obviously, the phone is going to tell us truly what he's involved in."
The cell phone was expected to be processed after officers obtained a search warrant.
