Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing 4-Year-Old Hemet Boy

A man suspected of fatally beating his girlfriend's 4-year-old son in Hemet was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder.

Derwin Vining, 27, was booked into the Hemet jail following an investigation into the death of the child, whose name has yet to be released by Riverside County coroner's officials.

Hemet police Lt. Eddie Pust said the victim suffered undisclosed injuries at his home in the 500 block of Mobley Lane, near Buena Vista Street, early Monday afternoon. Paramedics were called to the residence and found the boy unconscious and in grave condition, according to Pust.

The youngster was transported to Hemet Valley Medical Center, where he died a few hours later.

Detectives questioned Vining and other witnesses, culminating in the suspect's arrest.

Pust said the suspect will be transferred to a Riverside County detention facility, where his initial bail will be set at $1 million.

Vining has no documented prior felony convictions.
