SoCal Father Delivers Baby in His Own Driveway

The mother, Vanessa Chavez, knew she would not make it to the hospital only 10 miles away

A Southern California family received a special delivery in their driveway on Sunday — but it wasn't a package from the mail carrier. It was their new bundle of joy, a baby boy named Bronson.

Hugo Chavez, his wife Vanessa and their two children left for the hospital around 1:30 a.m. after she began experiencing contractions.

Although the hospital is only 10 miles away from the family's Upland home, the expectant mother said she wasn't going to make it to the hospital. The baby was coming.

Hugo called 911, turned the car around and headed back home. When the family pulled into the driveway, his wife's water broke. The baby's head was showing and next thing Chavez knew, he had delivered the baby.

During the birth, Chavez was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, but said the delivery happened quickly. Paramedics soon arrived and let the proud dad cut the baby's umbilical cord.

The newborn and his mother are doing well, Chavez said.
