Man Gets Prison Time After Dragging Bloody Puppy Down Street

Dossey James pleaded no contest to two counts of animal cruelty after dragging his 4-month-old puppy down a street

A man caught on video dragging his bloody 4-month-old pitbull puppy on a leash down a Los Angeles street was sentenced to 16 months in prison after pleading no contest to felony animal abuse.

Dossey James, 28, was arrested on Jan. 3 after repeatedly dragging a puppy on the street because it refused to walk, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Witnesses took cell phone video and reported to police that James continued to drag the pup even after it was injured and bleeding. At one point, James picked up the puppy and threw it to the ground, according to a news release from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

James was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, police said.

James pleaded no contest to two counts of animal cruelty, and along with 16 months in prison is barred from owning or having contact with any animals for 10 years.

James was on probation for a burglary conviction when he was arrested, and later admitted to a similar animal cruelty incident on Dec. 19, 2013.

The pit bull underwent surgery after suffering lacerations on his legs and stomach area, police said. He is recovering at the city’s Animal Services Department.
