Man in Custody After Shooting at Ice Cream Truck, Standoff

A man in Southern California who shot at an ice cream truck, then barricaded himself inside a San Bernardino residence was taken into custody moments after a fire broke out at the home Sunday night, police said.

The standoff came to an end when the man, identified as 59-year-old Terry McKinney, was placed in handcuffs after jumping out of a window when the flames erupted.

It was unclear how the fire started. Police said no one was hurt.

Fire crews extingiushed the house fire and prevented it from spreading in the neighborhood.

Officers responded at about 3:30 p.m. to a call of shots fired in the 700 block of W. 19th Street (map), which is across the street from San Bernardino High School. Police said the McKinney came out of the home once more to open fire before retreating again.

A SWAT team was called in to assist in the standoff. An armored vehicle was hit by gunfire, but police said no one was injured.

McKinney allegedly continued to fire at officers as they tried to tear gas him out of the home, police said.

The motive for the shooting was unclear. No further details were immediately available.
