Critical Mass.: OC Triplets Headed to College Together at MIT

Over 18,000 applied, just 8 percent got in. But one Southern California family will be very well represented in MIT's Class of 2019.

A set of triplets from the same Orange County school was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among the most rigorous universities in the world. Claire, Christopher and Edward Goul will attend next fall, according to a Sage Hill School spokeswoman.

Each of the students have accomplished careers at the Newport Coast school, Torrey Olins said.

Claire will be the student speaker at Sage Hill's June 5 commencement ceremony and was selected as one of 300 Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists from across the nation, Olins said.

Christopher and Edward are National Merit Scholar finalists, Olins said. Edward helped found the school's Student Led Investment Club, while Christopher played in the Sage Hill varsity basketball team's playoffs this week.

"We always told them, 'You need to explore,'" their mother, Karen Thorp, told The Orange County Register.

MIT admitted 1,467 students this year, just 8 percent of the 13,306 who applied, according to a blog post on the school's Admissions website. The Cambridge, Mass. school accepted students from more than 1,000 high schools in 67 countries -- but offered no statistics on accepting siblings.
