Stolen Vehicle Suspect Drives on Sidewalk, Hangs Out of Car During Wild Police Pursuit

After that, the driver appeared to be cornered until he drove through a small opening in a fence and began driving on the sidewalk.

A California Highway Patrol pursuit involved a driver hanging out of the moving suspected stolen vehicle, driving on the sidewalk of surface streets and high speeds on the 110 Freeway Wednesday night.

Gil Leyvas and Newschopper4 Bravo were overhead and caught to up to the chase at approximately 10:20 p.m on the southbound 110 Freeway in the Harbor-Gateway area, and the pursuit concluded peacefully at a public housing complex in Watts at approximately 10:50 p.m.

Initially, the suspect drove to the end of the southbound 110 Freeway in San Pedro before pulling a dangerous U-turn and proceeding northbound on the 110 Freeway. Moving at high speeds over 90 mph, the suspect passed by the 110 Freeway and 91 Freeway interchange at approximately 10:30 p.m.

At 10:33 p.m., the suspect exited the 110 Freeway at Imperial Highway and began driving eastbound, blowing through red lights and showing no regard for traffic rules. The driver proceeded to start waving at the helicopter above from his window.

Moments later, he seemed to gain confidence and opened the driver's side door of the moving vehicle and started partially hanging outside the suspected stolen vehicle while it was moving.

After that, the driver appeared to be cornered until he drove through a small opening in a fence and began driving on the sidewalk.

The pursuit concluded when the suspect abruptly stopped near the corner of 115th Street and Alvaro Street in South LA. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle with his arms up and surrendered to law enforcement.

The LAPD and CHP were both involved in the pursuit, with the CHP taking the lead. The suspect was immediately taken into custody without further incident, and the vehicle was removed from the scene at Nickerson Gardens public housing complex in Watts almost immediately.
