The city of San Jose is set to pay a $1.1 million settlement to a man who was paralyzed from the chest down at age 16 when he took a spill on his bicycle at a city park 10 year ago.
The City Council is expected to finalize the deal with Alex Ghenis on Tuesday.
City attorney Rick Doyle tells the San Jose Mercury News that other than police-related cases it would be the biggest settlement in his 15 years on the job. It comes after years of mediation over who was to blame for the crash.
Ghenis was riding a BMX bike on a makeshift dirt jump at Calabazas Park in 2004 when he crashed and landed on his head.
The city had bulldozed the jumps at the park before the crash but allowed the community to rebuild them.
