Suspect Arrested in World Cup Party Killing

Police have arrested a suspect in connection to the killing of a man attending a World Cup party in National City last month.

Daniel A. Gonzalez was arrested Monday by Tijuana police and then turned over to National City police. He was booked in jail on suspicion of murder.

Police say Gonzales was identified as the suspect in the June 17 killing of Josue Crook, who was found shot dead in the 300 block of Highland Avenue outside the Rincon Del Mar restaurant.

He had been at the restaurant watching the Mexico-Brazil World Cup match earlier in the afternoon when a fight erupted, which later spilled into the street, police say.

Crook was shot outside, about 30 feet away from the business. While the restaurant had been hosting a World Cup celebration at the time, it’s unclear if the fight had anything to do with the soccer game.

Family members have said Crook wasn’t a violent or aggressive person and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police say the investigation is continuing.
