UCLA Football Player Arrested on Suspicion of Robbery Involving Uber Driver

UCLA football player Ishmael Adams was arrested Sunday on suspicion of robbery, police said.

The 21-year-old defensive back is accused of using force to take a cellphone from an Uber driver, UCLA officials told NBC News.

University police say Adams was arrested on campus about 3:30 a.m. after the driver, who allegedly suffered minor injuries in the incident, called police.

Adams was being held on $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

No further details were provided.

Adams' arrest came while the 13th-ranked Bruins were beginning preparations for their season opener Saturday against Virginia at the Rose Bowl.

Adams became a stalwart of the Bruins defense backfield after he started all 13 games for the Bruins last season and in 2013.

In 2014, he returned his two interceptions for touchdowns. He was tenth on the team with 41 tackles and posted a season-high seven tackles in two games.

In 2013, he led the team with four interceptions.

Bill Redell, who coached Adams' at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, believes the incident may have been a misunderstanding

"Great kid, great character, big leader at Oaks Christian on the campus, in the classroom on the football field," Redell said.
