Wrong Way Driver in Sacramento, 4 Die in Crash: CHP

Four people died Wednesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash that blocked multiple westbound lanes on Highway 50 in Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The three-car crash was reported 2:24 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 50 at Stockton Boulevard, according to NBC affiliate KCRA.

CHP officials said the driver of a Toyota Prius was reportedly heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 50 when the vehicle slammed head on into a pickup truck.

A woman driving the Prius and three men inside the pickup truck were all pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.

A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, but the driver only suffered minor injuries.

That driver told KCRA that he couldn't see anything before he crashed into the vehicles. He was then able to get out of his car to try and help the other people involved in the crash, but had to back away once the pickup truck went up in flames.
It is too early early to determine if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, CHP said.

All but two of the westbound lanes was closed as of 5:30 a.m.

Authorities said it will take hours for crews to investigate the crash scene and that there is no estimated time for when all lanes will reopen.
