Family Grief-Stricken After Teenage Boy Fatally Shot in South Los Angeles

"I never thought in a million years that it would be my baby," his mother said.

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday night in the Westmont area of South Los Angeles.

The shooting was reported at 9 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 93rd Street, between Vermont and Normandie avenues, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The boy was discovered on his driveway with at least one gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, Schrader said.

Family members identified the victim as Isaiah Rodgers.

Lakisha Walker told NBC4 he left minutes before the shooting to look for his younger brother at a friend's house. She believes he was "running for his life" at the time of the shooting.

"I never thought in a million years that it would be my baby," she said.

The victim does not have any ties to gangs, but it is unknown if the shooting was gang-related, Schrader added.

A description of the shooter was not immediately available.

"If you know anything, please let us know because I need to find justice for my son," Walker said, in tears.
