Teachers Won't Face Sex Assault Charges in Alleged Student Beach Trips

Two Southern California high school teachers accused of having sex with students on trips to the beach will not be charged with sexual assault, the Orange County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Melody Suzanne Lippert, 38, Covina, and Michelle Louise Ghirelli, 30, of West Covina, are accused of taking underage students on unapproved school camping trips to San Clemente Beach and bringing alcohol, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors reviewed the evidence for sex assault allegations and said "there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt any other charges" beyond alcohol-related charges against the women.

The women allegedly camped with five male students between Dec. 27 and Dec. 29, 2014, and illegally gave them alcohol throughout the trip, prosecutors said.

Both women have been charged in connection with giving alcohol to underage students and face up to one year in jail if convicted, the DA's office said.

At the time of the crimes, Lippert was a teacher at South Hills High School in West Covina and Ghirelli was an employee at the Covina-Valley Unified School District.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be filed at a later date, the DA's office said. Both are due in court Friday.
