Elon Musk's New Elevator Paves Way for Reduced Traffic

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has sparked social media mayhem once again. In just one day, he's garnered more than 800,000 views on an Instagram video unveiling a new elevator that could one day help ease traffic on the freeway.

During a TED conference earlier this year, Musk detailed his idea for an underground network of traffic tunnels in Los Angeles, called "The Boring Project." His company has been digging the first tunnel in a Hawthorne parking lot across from SpaceX.

The Instagram video posted Wednesday shows a Tesla car being lowered underground on an all-white platform surrounded by a construction site. It was posted with the caption "Testing The Boring Company car elevator."

Musk said at the April TED conference that he is designing the project so that, once underground, the cars in the tunnels would ride on computer-controlled sleds at 124 mph. He predicted that with the new technology, going from Westwood to LAX would take six minutes or less.
