Reduce, Reuse, Recession: Three Simple Things

We know that going green helps save our own green from flying out of our bank accounts. The plunging stock market is doing a fine job on its own for that, thank you very much.

But how much are you actually doing?

Here are three simple things you can do right now:

  • Water. You can conserve water by turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth or do the dishes. And for the hardcore among you: if it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.
  • Plastic bags. You know you’ve got old swag bags lying around somewhere. Dig them out and take them with you for shopping. Or use the plastic bags you already have on your next visit to the grocery. Some places will give you a small credit for not using their bags. You can use empty bread bags over and over for taking sandwiches to work. If you’re lucky enough to still have a job, tighten your belt by brown bagging it… or bread bagging it.
  • Stuff. Get a head start on spring cleaning. Go through closets and rid yourself of extra stuff. Get a tax write off for donations, freecycle old goods (and find freebies for yourself in the process) or get a few extra bucks by selling it cheap on eBay.

If you won’t do it for Mother Earth, do it for yourself.
