Animal in Water Main May Have Contaminated San Jose Water: Officials

Homes in northeast San Jose remain under a boil water notice after water in the area tested positive for E. coli.

Several people are sick after drinking the contaminated water, which the San Jose Water Company said was likely caused by an animal that got into a water main.

The water company first issued a notice to boil water on Friday to residents on Lisbon Drive, Lisbon Court, Sydney Drive, Rowley Drive, Madrid Drive and Madrid Court in the 95132 zip code area of San Jose.

In addition, Milpitas Christian School and a resident at Stonewood Lane were notified, officials said.

Officials on Thursday said Sydney Drive was the only street that still had contaminated water.

Crews have been flushing out pipes and testing fire hydrants and hoses in the area.

San Jose Water Company spokesman John Tang said crews are working around the clock until the water is clean.

Lakisha Rodriguez said her entire family and two children who attend her in-home daycare have been sick, suffering from nausea and diarrhea.

"It's very frustrating," Rodriguez said. "It's very disappointing in a lot of ways."

The problem is also costing Rodriguez $300 a day in lost business because she can only care for two children until the water is safe.

"It would have been too difficult to flush the toilet, wash their hands and keep them clean without getting sick," she said.

The earliest the water will be clean is Sunday, Tang said. Residents have been receiving free bottled water while crews work to flush out the contaminated water.

E. coli, or Escherichia, are mostly harmless bacteria living in the intestines of people and animals but some strains lead to illnesses with diarrhea and vomiting and in about 5 to 10 percent of cases, what is called a STEC infection that can cause a life-threatening complication, hemolytic uremic syndrome, according to the website of the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control.
