Covered California Enrollment Deadline Passes

The deadline to sign up for health care in 2015 through the insurance marketplace was Sunday at midnight.

The Kaiser Permanente store at The Plant Shopping Center in San Jose helped with the last minute push to get people signed up. This weekend, they extended their hours to sign people up for insurance.

Dozens of people came into the office to sign up for health insurance coverage--some for the first time in years. In February, nearly 300,000 Californians enrolled for the first time for a health care coverage plan through Covered California. In addition, more than 1 million Californians who purchased health insurance through the exchanges in 2014 were expected to re-enroll.

One man, who signed up for Kaiser Permanente insurance Sunday afternoon, was glad to have a better health safety net.

"I'm diabetic, so I had to sign up to take care of my health and my kids," Burt Garcia said. "It's worth it. It's good"

A free health care enrollment fair was also held in San Leandro Sunday.

Those who did not sign up for insurance by midnight Sunday will have to pay a fee of at last $325 per person and about $163 for each child under 18.
