People around the globe will mark World AIDS Day Monday to honor those whose lives have been affected by the devastating disease.

The largest Bay Area event will be held at the National AIDS Memorial in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

Currently, 33 million people worldwide are infected with AIDS. One million of them are here in the United States.

The San Francisco ceremony starts at noon.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and other South Bay leaders will mark the day with a ceremony at city hall at 6:30 p.m.

San Francisco General's Ward 86, where AIDS patients are treated, is commemorating it's 25th year. It's the oldest HIV/AIDS clinic in the world and treats 3,000 ptients per year, reported the Chronicle.
