Stanford Professor Battling Cancer Turns to Social Media

Stanford Professor Nalini Ambady is an award-winning researcher, mentor, mom and friend.

She's also battling leukemia and trying to beat the odds.  Doctors estimate she may have a one in 20,000 chance of finding a bone marrow match - her odds are complicated because she's of South Asian descent.

Ambady is not only holding on, she is fighting back by launching a social media campaign to get the word out about her story and urge more people to register as bone marrow donors.

The big challenge is that the pool of South Asian donors is relatively small. She's hoping to increase her chances through Facebook, Twitter, email and blogs friends have spread the word on how to register and the location of donor registration events.

Ambady became the first Indo-Amerian female professor in the Psychology Department at Harvard University.  She also worked at Tufts.  Her research was featured in Malcolm Galdwell's book, Blink.  Timing is critical.  Doctors say she only has 8 weeks left to live and urgently needs this transplant.
