Jed York Won't Completely Close the Door on Alex Smith

It 's no secret that the 49ers are in desperate need of a quarterback.

And while General Manager Trent Baalke doesn't believe the quarterback of the future is on the current roster, team President Jed York is not willing to close the door on former No. 1 pick Alex Smith.

York spoke with KNBR's Gary Radnich Thursday about what the team has been doing the past two weeks since he hired Jim Harbaugh as the team's new head coach.

While York was reluctant to speak specifics about the 49ers rosters -- leaving that to Baalke and Harbaugh -- he said the team is not closing the door on Smith, who has struggled since being dubbed the team's quarterback of the future.

"I think that's something that Jim is gonna to have to evaluate," York said. "He needs to sit down and figure out if Alex is a guy that can be here. Alex is going to have to figure out does he want a fresh start. And maybe that's best for everybody. I don't think we've made up our mind on that."

Smith is a free agent and most expect him to want a fresh start after dealing with injuries, a revolving door of offensive coordinators and head coaches in his short career in San Francisco.
