A 16-year-old boy died following a Sunday skateboarding accident in South San Francisco, police said today.

The San Mateo County coroner's office today identified the victim as John Tagobo of South San Francisco.

The accident happened at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the area of Joseph and Ida drives, police said. Tagobo lost control of his skateboard, collided with a curb and was thrown about 15 feet into shrubbery.

He managed to call his family and was immediately rushed to a hospital, police said.

He suffered serious internal injuries and was pronounced dead at  the hospital Monday, according to the coroner's office.

Police said Tagobo was not wearing a helmet or safety gear at the  time of the crash and are reminding residents to use proper safety equipment  when riding a skateboard, bicycle, scooter or motor vehicle.
