Adobe Shows “Love” for Apple

Flash fight sparks advertising campaign

"We Love Apple."

It's all over the papers, and on the web.  Adobe, getting all gushy over its longtime tech partner, and recent adversary.  Is it an olive branch?  A backhanded love note?  Reading through the whole ad, after the parts where Adobe talks about how much it "loves" apps, touch screens, devices, etc., the software giant also mentions that it doesn't love "anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web."

Not so lovey-dovey after all.  Adobe clearly wants to try and take back control of the Flash issue, which has been owned by Apple since Steve Jobs posted a note about why Apple will not include the Adobe technology on its iPads or iPhones.  Not that most users of these devices know from HTML5, or even Flash itself, but with iPads selling like hotcakes, the lack of video on many websites is being noticed.

So, even if it's been awhile, pick up a paper if you get a chance.  Chances are pretty good the Adobe ad is in there somewhere.  What do you think?  Is Adobe reaching out with a hand to shake and make up?  Or with more of a palm to slap?

Adobe co-founders Chuck Geschke and John Warnock, who are highly regarded here in the Silicon Valley, also posted a statement criticizing Apple.

"When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers," they wrote, adding that Apple's "opposite approach" could undermine a future in which mobile devices outnumber traditional computers on the Internet.

Apple reponded to the spat by issuing a statement saying that it also believed in openness. The company said that is why it favors the emerging HTML5 programming standard rather than Adobe's proprietary Flash product for Web video.
