Father Newsom Apologizes to His Staff

San Francisco mayor returns to city hall with a new appreciation for parenthood

Three days into fatherhood and Mayor Gavin Newsom was already back at city hall as a changed man.

One of the mayor's first acts of business was to apologize to his staff for not being more sensitive to the difficult balance of being a parent and maintaining a career.

"I'm already more empathetic," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. We'll see how long it lasts."

Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, welcomed  Montana Tessa Newsom into the world at 12:39 p.m. Friday. The couple's daughter was named after Mrs. Newsom's family ranch in Montana and Tessa was Newsom's late mother's name.

The new more sensitive Newsom might be around for awhile. He tweeted that both mother and daughter are expected to come home from California Pacific Medical Center on Tuesday. And the Mayor Dad may have his work cut out for him.

The gubernatorial hopeful said he has changed more diapers than his actress wife because she is still recovering from a C-section. The extra work has forced the mayor to compromise on his ideals a little.

"I know I'm not supposed to be a chain mayor, but I admit I've been spending a lot of time at Walgreens," he told the Chronicle
