A mid-span crash closed all lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge for a time Wednesday.

Up to five vehicles were involved in the 11 o'clock crash.  Traffic immediately backed up to the Waldo Tunnel to the north and along Doyle Drive in the south.  From helicopter footage over the scene, it appeared crews emergency responded to two separate crash scenes about 100 yards apart.

The vehicles involved were going northbound.  One witness said it started with a blown tire.  That man said he helped pull two children from a car that flipped over in the chain reaction crash.

Crews were able to open one lane in each direction about 30 minutes after the crash, but that did not ease traffic much.  All lanes were clear by 12:15 p.m.

Emergency crews took the wounded to the nearby pedestrian area for treatment as dozens of tourist walked by on a pre-Thanksgiving Day stroll across the bridge.

Local know the Golden Gate Bridge has no center divide and therefore no protection from vehicles that happen to cross over.  It was not clear if that played a role in Wednesday's crash.
