Hard Liquor Banned at Belmont Facilities

The city of Belmont Parks and Recreation Commission will consider a policy change Wednesday night that would ban hard liquor at city-run facilities, a parks and recreation spokesman said.
Currently the city allows all types of alcohol at its parks and five buildings, rented out for events such as parties and weddings, as long as a permit is obtained, Parks and Recreation Director Jonathon Gervais said.
The change would amend that rule to allow only beer, wine and champagne at such events, Gervais said.
The goal is to limit the city's liability, reduce the likelihood of confrontations resulting from alcohol consumption, and to send a better message to children about alcohol, Gervais said.
"We have no intention of stopping folks from having a glass of champagne at their wedding,"Gervais said. "But it's that next level that we're trying to control."
The nine-member commission, which includes seven adults and two youths, will vote on the policy change at the department's 7 p.m. meeting, Gervais said.
