Is Gavin Newsom Turning Into Lance Armstrong?

San Francisco's mayor has been quiet since he ended his run for governor with one exception

Mayor Gavin Newsom continues his vow of silence following the end of his gubernatorial campaign with one glaring exception.

The San Francisco mayor has been seen around the City but he has remained out of the media spotlight and his public calender of appearances has remained a blank slate following his decision to end his run for governor on Oct. 30.

Some hoped Thursday's scheduled appearance at a star studded event honoring Glide Memorial’s Rev. Cecil William would lure Newsom out of his media hibernation. But a day later and Newsom is still quiet.

Now one Bay Area newspaper wonders if the mayor is pulling a page out of racing legend Lance Armstrong's book and forcing the media to communicate with him through his trusty friend Twitter.

His only public comments after ending his gubernatorial campaign have come on Twitter. Newsom has long been an avid supporter of the San Francisco-based social networking site.

Newsom announced his run for the state's highest office on the site, he tweeted the birth of his daughter to his more than 1.2 million followers and he has even integrated Twitter into City services.

But is the mayor really taking as dramatic a step as an international figure whose every move is fodder for tabloid headlines? Evidence would suggest not.

The mayor's own staff has struggled to keep tracks of where he has been since Halloween. Chances are Newsom is dealing with the understandable sting of ending a campaign that may have seem far fetched to some but within reach to him and adjusting to the surprising rigors of being a new father (coincidentally one of the reasons he cited for the end of his campaign).

Plus as the San Francisco Examiner points out "it would be difficult to explain complex city issues in 140 characters or less."
