Bah Humbug! Fires Banned on Christmas Day

Spare the Air Alert for Friday

Chestnuts can be roasting by an open fire on Christmas Eve but they have to come off by Christmas Day.

Air quality officials issued a winter Spare the Air alert for Friday. There goes the idea of staying warm all day by the fire in your pajamas after opening presents. On Spare the Air days, Bay Area residents are not allowed to burn wood or manufactured fire logs in fireplaces, wood stoves, fire pits or in any other capacity.

A quick check on the Bay Area Air Quality Managment District's Web site and what to your wondering eyes should appear?: A green light for fires on Christmas Eve. But just below, a bigger red light announcing the ban on fires for Friday.

The air quality on Thursday was in the mid-80s on a scale of 300. That indicates in the moderate range. Officials will let us know on Friday how the air quality looks.

According to the BAAQMD, there are about 1.4 million fireplaces and wood stoves in the Bay Area, and smoke is the region's largest source of wintertime air pollution.

So, wrap up in that Snuggie and slippers you got from grandma, tune in the Yule log channel and flip the switch on the faux fireplace.
