Mehserle Verdict Reaction Reaches Beyond Bay Area

Anger and frustration over the Johannes Mehserle verdict is not bound by state borders.

The vandalism of a police car in Tacoma overnight is apparently part of a protest against the case, police said.

KING-TV reports a Tacoma police officer awoke about 2:30 a.m. Friday to the sound of windows being smashed in the patrol car parked outside his home. The officer chased off two men wearing hooded sweat shirts. The damaged police car had been spray-painted with the words "Oscar Grant was here."

Protesters in Portland, Ore. also vandalized a bank and a community college, overnight. The demonstrators managed to throw rocks through windows before police broke up the crowds. They say they were acting out in solidarity with Oakland.

A Los Angeles jury found former BART officer Mehserle guilty of involuntary manslaughter Thursday for the shooting death of unarmed passenger Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale BART station on New Year's Day 2009.
