Moms Charged with Stealing $30k from SJ School Club

Fundraiser money was spent on Netflix and Old Navy

Two mothers accused of embezzling around $30,000 from the Baldwin Elementary Home and School Club in San Jose have a court date next month.

Jennifer Lee Vazquez, 42, and Wendi Marie Hayes, 28, will be charged with grand theft, San Jose Police Officer Jose Garcia confirmed.

The two were in charge of the club's finances, but spent the money on things like Netflix movies, gas and clothes at Old Navy, the Mercury News reports.

The club earns much of its money through fundraisers like walkathons and book fairs. The money would have gone toward kindergarten handwriting programs or school counselors.

In March, the bank notified the Oak Grove School District of suspicious behavior before the district called the police, Assistant Superintendent Chris Jew said.

"Our goal is to seek reimbursement," Jew said.

Both moms self-surrendered in August when a warrant was issued for their arrest. They posted $25,000 bail each and were released.

Police said they have been cooperative with investigators.
