New Poll: Boxer by a Hair

The U.S. Senate race in California has traded leaders, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

The new Rasmussen survey of likely voters came in with Sen. Barbara Boxer four points ahead of challenger Carly Fiorina

  • Sen. Barbara Boxer - 47 percent
  • Carly Fiorina - 43 percent
  • Undecided - 6 percent

The numbers forced Rasmussen to change the California race from "Toss-Up" status to "Leans Democrat."

The last poll had Fiorina ahead by 1 percentage point, which was called at the time a virtual tie. The latest survey was taken this week and has a margin of error of four percentage points.

The Public Policy Polling has Boxer further ahead of Fiorina. That poll was also released Tuesday and found Boxer leads Fiorina by a 50-42 margin. It has the same margin of error but was taken last week.

The Public Policy Polling survey came with some analysis.

"The simple reality is that for a Republican to win in California they have to be appealing to Democrats and for now Carly Fiorina has not passed the test," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "Barbara Boxer has her party’s voters locked up and
for a Democrat in California that’s enough to win."

New numbers in the state's governor's race should come out Wednesday.
