A man on the run from cops blew through a stop sign during a high-speed chase, plowing into a another car, killing a mother and seriously injuring her baby son, Oakland police said.
Oakland police spotted a black Acura Integra driving erratically near West Grand Avenue and West Street just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
When they turned on their lights and sirens and tried to stop the driver, identified as San Lorenzo resident Steven Reed, he took off on southbound West Street, launching a high-speed chase, police said.
Reed then blew through a stop sign at an intersection at 18th Street and slammed into a black Hyundai Accent, police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.
The Hyundai's driver, a 25-year-old woman, was critically injured and died at a hospital. She was identified Thursday as Marquita Bosley. Her 19-month-old son was also in the car and was seriously hurt. He had emergency surgery and was in critical condition Thursday morning.
Reed was also hurt in the collision and was taken to a hospital. Police arrested him for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums released a statement asking the public to share any information about the crash with the Oakland Police Department.
"The tragic events of last night that left a 25-year-old woman dead and a 19-month-old baby in critical condition are truly heart-wrenching," Dellums said.
"As this incident is still under investigation, let us come together as one community and work with our Police Department to provide any information about this collision," he said.
The officers involved in the pursuit will be placed on paid administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
"Just like any vehicle pursuit or officer-involved shooting where there's a death, we do an extensive investigation," Thomason said.
Last May, two people were killed in a crash involving a homicide suspect who was trying to outrun police.
