Raj Mathai Makes Jump to News Desk

One of the most well known personalities in the Bay Area is leaving, but he's not going far.  NBC's Raj Mathai is sliding over one spot on the news desk to anchor the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Jessica Aguirre.

"This is a big move for Raj, and one we are proud to support and excited to see happen," said NBC Bay Area's Vice President of News Jonathan Mitchell.

A 3-time Emmy award winner, Mathai has spent his entire television career (21 years) in the NBC family and is equally excited about the switch.

"Having grown up in the Bay Area and watching the station since I was a kid, it's a great honor and challenge for me," Mathai said. "This is a great new chapter for me and the station."

Mathai is still keeping a hold of his sports cap.  He will continue to host his top-rated Sports Sunday broadcasts following Sunday Night Football and will remain part of the Giants broadcast team on NBC along with Jon Miller and Mike Krukow.

Viewers, critics and colleagues alike have praised Mathai's unique style.  He has reported on-location from the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin and Vancouver. Mathai is among the handful of people in the world to have run the Olympic Torch three times (1996, 2002 and 2008).

Raj is a local guy. He was born in Trivandrum, India, but grew up on the Peninsula and graduated from Los Altos High School. He went on to graduate from San Diego State University with a degree in journalism and political science.
