A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday night in San Jose in support of two young boys attacked on Halloween night.

A 12-year-old boy was shot and his 13-year-old friend was stabbed while they were trick-or-treating this past weekend.

Police said the attacks were gang-related, although the young victims are not affiliated with a gang.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed held a news conference Thursday to address all gang violence in the city.  Reed said it was clear we "can't arrest our way out of this problem."  The San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis seconded that thought.

In the Halloween case, police have four suspects in custody.  The district attorney said he will charge all four as adults, although three of them are juveniles.

The suspects are Eduardo Cristobal, an 18-year-old Milpitas resident, and three juveniles -- two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old.

All four face two counts of attempted murder and are scheduled to  be arraigned Thursday.

The 12-year-old boy who was shot remains in critical condition.  His friend, who was stabbed, is recovering.

The boys attend Lee Mathson Middle School.  Their principal called both great students with nuclear smiles.

A large gathering is expected at the corner of King and Story Road at 6 p.m. Thursday.
