Skunky Pot Leads to Big Bust in SF

Unmistakable odor leads police to find

A man is under arrest after San Francisco police discovered a large marijuana-growing operation in a Sunset District home, police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said.

He said officers went to the home in the 2200 block of 20th Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. and confiscated 346 mature marijuana plants as well as growing equipment. One man was arrested in connection with the operation and faces cultivation and sales charges, Williams said.

That man had a medical marijuana card, according to police. But the limit of plants for someone with a card is 24.  This man had 14 times that amount.

Police say they also found two pounds of dried pot.

In the past five months, officers have discovered 20 marijuana-growing operations in and around the Sunset and Ingleside neighborhoods, according to police.

Investigators say they were tipped off to the home after a neighbor reported a skunk-like smell.  A woman next door to the house said the smell had been bothering her for months. Marijuana often smells like skunk.  After that report, a search warrant was issued and the pot grow was uncovered.

Police say complaints about smell, noise from fans and lots of people going in and out of a particular home often lead to a bust.
