Target Gets Green Light To Go to Metreon

There was little doubt after such a long love affair but Target's move to San Francisco took a major step forward.

The San Francisco Redevelopment Agency unanimously approved the signage and design changes needed to be approved Tuesday for the plan to move forward.

Construction on the new 85,000-square-foot Target inside of the Metreon could begin as early as this year and the store could open by the middle of 2012.

The project will cost $30 million and be funded by the owners of the Metreon while employing up to 250 people. The Metreon is set to get a the expensive upgrade complete with a 22-foot illuminated Target sign, where the glass Metreon logo currently is on Fourth and Mission streets, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The City's love-affair with Target took a bumpy turn when the store's political contributions were revealed. The store also began reportedly exploring options other than the Metreon.

The mall's owners, Westfield, also plan to open a new food court, triple the size of the current one, and welcome new shops along its street front, including La Boulange Bakery and Best of Burger.

Target has long been rumored to be moving into the troubled shopping center that has been looking for an anchor tenant to revitalize the Metreon for years. A plan to open New York City icon Tavern on the Green at the Metreon fell through earlier this year.
