1-Alarm Fire at Pittsburg Portable Classroom Considered Suspicious

A one-alarm fire at an abandoned school in Pittsburg Sunday afternoon is considered suspicious, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District official said.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 1200 block of Stoneman Avenue around 4:10 p.m., Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Robert Marshall said.

The fire was burning in a portable classroom of the former Central Junior High School campus, which has been abandoned for about eight years, he said.

The school's new campus is adjacent to the old one, Marshall said.

The fire was under control shortly before 4:30 p.m. and severely damaged a wall in the classroom, according to Marshall.

The fire is suspicious because there was no power running in the building, he said.

Marshall estimated the fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
