2 Dead in Fatal Crash Near Byron Airport: CHP

Byron Highway has reopened after a fatal crash that left two dead Saturday morning near the Byron Airport in unincorporated Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident was reported near Byron Highway and Byron Hot Springs Road at 10:44 a.m.

An 89-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man were both killed in the wreck, which occurred when a Ford Flex making a left hand turn was broad-sided by a pickup truck from behind, according to Officer John Fransen.

Both vehicles went out of control and overturned. The Ford Flex rolled into a ditch and the pickup truck collided with a telephone pole, according to Fransen.

"There were several children that were passengers within the silver Dodge pickup truck, and they were flown to Children's Hospital in Oakland," Fransen said.

At least two adults were transported to medical centers, but as of 2 p.m. it was unclear how many victims survived the crash and to what extent they were injured.
