A 22-year-old San Jose man died and a passenger was injured Tuesday morning after their car drove off of U.S. Highway 101 and overturned in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 5:35 a.m., a 2001 Mazda was heading south in the far right lane of Highway 101 south of Tully Road when it veered onto the shoulder and struck a light pole, CHP Officer Chris Falkowski said.
The crash caused the Mazda to overturn numerous times and come to rest on its roof, Falkowski said.
The driver of the car, identified as Troy Donecho of San Jose, died at the scene and his passenger, a 21-year-old San Jose man, was treated for minor lacerations to his head.
Investigators do not know if another car was involved in the crash, Falkowski said.
The crash remains under investigation and the CHP is awaiting a toxicology report from the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors, he said.
