10 California Hospitals — Including UCSF Medical Center — Cited, Fined

State health officials have cited and fined 10 California hospitals over so-called "immediate jeopardy'' incidents — preventable errors that cause or have the potential to cause serious injuries or death.

Among the other facilities hit with fines are the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center, Beverly Hospital in Los Angeles County, and John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Riverside County.

The California Department of Public Health said this week that the fines total $700,000

The University of California, San Diego, Medical Center received a $100,000 penalty for the death of a patient who walked out of the hospital undetected and died after falling into a nearby canyon.

The health department started handing out "immediate jeopardy'' penalties in 2007 to pressure hospitals to improve training and quality checks.
