The panel overseeing the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has voted to penalize the main construction contractor $11 million over shoddy steel anchor rods.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Thursday's rebuke to American Bridge/Fluor was unanimous from the three-member panel. They agreed to withhold $8 million to help pay for the $24 million retrofit that was ordered after dozens of rods snapped on the bridge's seismic stabilizers before it opened in 2013. The panelists tacked on a $3 million penalty for hundreds more anchor rods that were flooded.
After-hours calls to American Bridge and Fluor were not immediately returned.
Despite the findings, the panel also voted Thursday night to formally accept the bridge and declare the construction complete.
