Firefighters controlled a two-alarm fire in a San Jose house Monday evening that displaced 15 people, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at 6:12 p.m. in the 2600 block of Othello Avenue, according to the fire department.
The fire was well involved when firefighters arrived and houses on either side were threatened by the flames, fire Capt. Reggie Williams said.
Complicating things further, the gas meter failed during the fire fueling the blaze with natural gas and risking an explosion. Firefighters had to wait for PG&E to stop the flow of gas before they could fully put out the fire, Williams said.
The house on the right sustained moderate exposure damage, Williams said.
The burning home had been remodeled and 15 people lived there in seven bedrooms, Williams said. Ten people were home when the fire started but all got out safely.
Two dogs also lived in the home. The residents got one dog out but the other died in the fire, Williams said.
Local
The fire was controlled at 7:01 p.m. Its cause appears to be accidental, but remains under investigation, Williams said.
