A 14-year-old boy died in Richmond from multiple gunshot wounds Monday morning, and one suspect was seen running away from the scene, police said.
Richmond Police Lt. Andre Hill said police were called out before 9:30 a.m. to the 3300 block of Ohio Ave. after the ShotSpotter activation system recorded multiple shots near the Greenway bike path.
The trail runs next to BART tracks, just behind Lovonya DeJean Middle School. Administrators briefly placed the campus on lockdown while police searched for the gunman.
Police said that the teenager — identified as Xavier McClanahan — was shot several times in the upper torso, and died shortly after medics arrived, Hill said.
Xavier's father, who went to the scene of the crime Monday, said his son was a good child.
"All I can say is you need to keep your kids close to you and know where they are at all times," said Barbara Whittler, the victim's distraught aunt.
Friends say Xavier studied at the nearby John F. Kennedy High School, but school district officials have yet to confirm that.

On Monday, neighbors, who placed flowers on the trail where Xavier was gunned down, said they were in disbelief that the teen wouldn’t be around to celebrate his 15th birthday in May.
BART reported a 10-minute delay between El Cerrito del Norte and Richmond in the Fremont, Richmond and Millbrae directions because of police activity. A suspect had not been identified as of Monday evening.
Community and clergy leaders say they plan to reach out to neighbors to ask them not to take it upon themselves to retaliate for the boy's death.
The last homicide reported in Richmond was on Saturday, when Leslie Graham Jr. 39, of Richmond died in a freeway shooting on Interstate Highway 80 after someone fired into his Jeep. Investigators believe the shooter targeted Graham.
The Contra Costa Times reports the teen was Richmond's fourth homicide of 2016.
