2 Bay Area Bottlenecks Make List of Worst in the Nation

The value of lost time is relatively high for one of the delays, about $59 million annually

The slow crawl of traffic that makes some Bay Area drivers want to bang their heads against the steering wheel is now backed up with a new study.

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to two major bottlenecks on the top 30 list released by the American Highway Users Alliance.

At No. 12 is a section of I-80 between US-101 and the western foot of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

This two mile-long section produces about 2.2 million hours of annual total delay. According to the report, the value of lost time for this delay stands at $59 million annually — relatively high — reflecting the high wages of commuters in this region.

The other bottleneck is at the other end of the Bay Bridge in Oakland — stretching between the eastern foot of the Bay Bridge and Ashby Avenue on a section of I-80 that provides access to the city of Berkeley. This bottleneck is ranked No. 16 on the list, with annual total delays that are slightly lower at 1.9 million hours.
