Off-Duty Deputy Kills Gunman in Alameda Grocery

An off-duty Alameda County Sheriff's deputy shopping at a grocery store has killed a gunman and may have wounded a second suspect in Alameda during an attempted robbery late Thursday night.

Alameda police said they received 911 calls about 10:30 p.m. reporting an armed robbery in progress and gunshots fired inside Bonfare Market, located at 1505 High St. There were two masked men inside, armed with guns. One of the guns was recovered Friday morning.

Some sort of confrontation occurred, authorities said, and the deputy said he feared for his safety and for the two empolyees inside the store: A cashier and someone working in the stockroom.

The deputy fired off his gun - a 20-year veteran - and killed one of the men. Police said he may have also shot the second suspect. On Friday morning, police were still searching for the second man.

Neither the store employees nor the Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy were injured, police said.

"He did an oustanding job," an Alameda police spokesman Rob Frankland said of the deputy. "This was potentially a very dangerous situation."

According to police, suspects using a similar method of operation robbed the Bonfare Market on July 10.

High Street between Central Avenue and Liberty Avenue will be closed while the investigation continues.
