4 Rescued After Car Falls 600 Feet on Peninsula

Four people were rescued early Thursday after they car fell about 600 feet off a cliff in San Mateo County along Highway 92 at Skyline Boulevard.

The California Highway Patrol and Coast Guard rescue crews airlifted three passengers to safety, and the fourth person scrambed up the mountainside to call for help. There were some broken bones, but everyone was expected to be OK.

CHP spokesman Art Montiel said that initial reports indicate driver drifted ff to the right shoulder, for a moment and then may have overcorrected and turned left into oncoming lane.

There was an oncoming vehicle in that lane and the driver turned right, swerving down a 600-foot embankment.

CHP credits the heavy brush in the area with “sort of” bracing the vehicle’s passengers for the fall.

Highway 92 was closed for four hours.

It does not appear that alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor.
