49ers $30 Million Under the Cap

So the San Francisco 49ers lost another one of its free agents Monday. At least the team is flush with cash.

A segment of 49ers' fans is growing continuously wary of the team's free agency plan going into a new season once filled with the promise of hope when the team announced the signing of head coach Jim Harbaugh in free agency.

Since the NFL ended its lockout last week and started free agency, the 49ers have been awfully quiet. The trend has been of more players walking out the door than in. Monday linebacker Manny Lawson signed a one year contract to join the Cincinnati Bengals.

He joins a list of ex-49ers that already includes center David Bass and corner back Nate Clements.

But with all the contract being freed up by losing starters, there has been one positive for the 49ers: The team is dramatically under the $120.4 million salary cap.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports that the 49ers have the third most cash available under the salary cap in the league right now.

The 49ers are projected to be just over $30 million under the salary cap, which would be good news if the team was interested in spending the money.

Contrary to some reports that the each NFL team has to spend a minimum salary under the new collective bargaining agreement, the 49ers do not.

A spending floor does not go into effect until 2013.
