49ers Attend Private Peyton Manning Workout: Report

Hidden interest may be part of the reason Alex Smith has not re-signed with the team.

Both executives with the San Francisco 49ers and Alex Smith said before the start of free agency they weren't worried about getting a contract done.

But almost a week into the start of free agency, and with a standing offer on the table, the former No. 1 pick has yet to resign with the team.

So why the delay?

ESPN might have the answer. The sports news network reports that head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman flew to North Carolina on Tuesday to attend a private workout for free agent quarterback Peyton Manning this week.

Further the team had him take a physical, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who said the team was "very impressed with what they saw."

The team then reportedly flew a doctor to North Carolina the following day to adminster a physical and to check the status of Manning's rehab following multiple neck surgeries.

Schefter said the 49ers are considered a long shot but one of the three finalists along with Tennessee and Denver.

There are no reports how Manning did on his physical.

Both Manning and Smith are represented by the same agent Tom Condon, which means the 49ers would have a hard time trying to hide any interest in the future hall-of-famer from Smith.
