San Francisco has made the short list to host Superbowl 50 and/or Superbowl  51.

That is the word today from NFL owners.

The league met in Chicago to whittle down the list of cities that want to host the mega-sports event in 2016 and/or 2017.

49ers CEO Jed York said the team is excited to be able to make a final bid for the first Bay Area Super Bowl since  1985. "Now we  have to work together to show the new stadium in Santa Clara will put on a  great show," York added.

The NFL owners announced three cities are in the running for the two Super Bowls:

  • San Francisco
  • South Florida (Miami)
  • Houston

It is SF vs. SF (South Florida) for 2016

Then it's Houston vs.the runner up for 2017.

Either way - it is looking good for San Francisco.

The game would be played in the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara.

Even if the actual game is played in Santa Clara, it's highly possible that many parties and pregame activities would still take place in San Francisco.

Niners owner Jed York also has said that if the team ever wins the Superbowl, the victory parade would be held in the city, not Santa Clara. The team is also holding on to the city in its actual name (San Francisco 49ers).

Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews told NBC Bay Area that he was totally fine with sharing the glory.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced the committee that will make the final push.

Members include names like Condoleeza Rice, Laurene Powell Jobs, former Mayor Willie Brown and chef Thomas Keller.

"There’s no better place to play host to the Super Bowl and celebrate one of our greatest sports than San Francisco and the Bay Area," said Lee. "San Francisco has proven time and again that we know how to host the world for major events and shine on the international stage. A Super Bowl in the Bay Area will bring an enormous economic boost to our entire region and leave a lasting legacy for Bay Area youth. I look forward to working with Daniel Lurie, the 49ers, Santa Clara Mayor Matthews and San Jose Mayor Reed to host the best Super Bowl ever."

The final announcement won't be made until May 2013 at the spring owners meeting.
